  • Step 1: Take the driver’s seat, shut all the doors, and unlock them manually.
  • Step 2: Press the key into the ignition port, but let it stay intact. There is no need to start the car.
  • Step 3: You will spot the unlock button on the door next to the driver’s seat. Press and hold the button for a while. At the same time, turn your key in the ignition so that the “On” light flashes. Everything except for the engine will be up and running if executed correctly.
  • Step 4: Turn the key quickly in this order: Off – On – Off – On while still holding the unlock button. Once the sequence is done, release your finger.
  • Step 5: If you are successful, there will be a clicking sound from the door locks. The locks will engage and disengage immediately.
  • Step 6: Use two fingers and long-press the “Lock” and “Unlock” buttons on the key fob. You should keep it that way until the door locks engage and disengage once more time, alerting drivers that the new security engineering method has already been applied.
  • Step 7: Put the newly setup key in the ignition and turn it to “On”. The program is done if you want to add one key fob only. But if several key fobs are included, make sure to set them up altogether.

  1. Your instructions don’t mention using any device other than the car itself and the key fob, but the video shows how to program a key fob for 2007-2011 HHRs using some kind of hardware interface that can apparently be purchased from smartboxauto.com. I’m guessing the device is not needed. But if not, why link to the video? Of course, if the device is needed your instructions should mention that. And in that case, WHAT ABOUT 2006 HHRs?
