Connectors and Terminals

Therefore, the under-the-hood connectors and terminals have endured many years of intense heat.

Voltage

After years of ignition, the spark plugs face corrosion over time, the gap increases, and a higher voltage needs to be created to overcome the gap.

Moreover, the old spark plug wires have a higher resistance level, leading to a higher demand for voltage. That’s why the standard voltage created still cannot start the engine.

Recommendation:

  • Remember to replace surrounding components such as spark plugs, ignition coil, and spark plug wires to enhance the longevity of the Optispark distributor.
  • Do not let the wires right above the manifold, as the heat will reduce the unit’s lifespan and lead to a higher voltage demand for the ignition system.
  • Be careful when using ignition amplifiers, especially aftermarket ones, as those lead to ozone buildup. It’s a factor that shortens the ignition distributor’s life.

Moisture

The optispark is exposed to moisture from various sources because of its placement. This unit is located on the front of the engine, the back of the water pump, and the top of the crank snout.

Therefore, driving into deep water areas can be dangerous to this unit. Like other units, it can have a serious problem if the water penetrates into the structure.

Wetness makes the bearings more fragile, especially when the drive mechanism is distorted by misalignment.

Later, if a bearing breakdown appears, the engine oil cooler leaks out of the area, and the opti may become saturated with coolant water.

As a result, the accurate ability of the optical sensors may corrode because of moisture buildup inside, leading to a broken Opti Spark.

Recommendation:

  • Do not let the vehicle experience undercarriage wash, as the high-pressure water can flow into the ignition distributor.
  • When washing at home, owners of lt series should not wash with a high-pressure water sprayer.

  1. I had a ’97 Camaro with the LT1’s opti spark. I drove it for several years and several times (it being a white car) I high sprayed it’s underhood and pillars as well as the engine to make her look good. There was no reason to spray the front where the opti was located.. so I didn’t. Despite the rest of the engine being drenched and scoured.. she always started up as usual.
